Ketone Bodies: What are they?

Ketogenic. That is a word that is kicked around when talking about diet plans – more specifically a Low Carb High Fat (LCHF) plan. It refers to the production of ketone bodies in the body.

So, what is a ketone body?

A ketone body is a chemical that is produced by the liver for the purpose of breaking down fat to use for energy. There are 3 main ketone bodies: acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and their spontaneous breakdown product, acetone. Ketone bodies, commonly referred to as “ketones,” are water-soluble.

In my next post of the series, I will be going over the role of ketones and weight management.
